Douglas M. Daub, MD
A native San Diegan, Dr. Daub went to Patrick Henry High School (class of 1986). He attended Brandeis University (just outside of Boston, Massachusetts), earning a double major in Biology and Anthropology. After college, Dr. Daub studied techniques in molecular biology, and investigated the genetics of lung cancer as well as astrocytoma, a form of malignant brain cancer.
Doing research-sitting at a lab bench-was solitary work, and results could take years to directly impact patients. Dr. Daub realized he wanted to meet and talk with patients himself, and directly observe improvements in their health.
He entered USC Medical School in 1996, and completed residency with Harbor-UCLA's Family Medicine Department in 2003. At USC, most medical training is done at the "Big County"-the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center (shown during the opening credits of General Hospital). Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, about half the size, is referred to as "Little County". Unfortunately, many patients seen in the county health system lack medical insurance, and/or have poor access to regular health care. While immensely sad for patients, this does provide an outstanding training environment-not only in seeing a wide range of diseases, but also in educating physicians how to educate their patients.
Dr. Daub realizes that a lot of medicine involves just listening. Empathy, caring and good communication are integral to his relationships with patients. His primary interest in medicine is preventive care. Many medical problems-such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer-can be identified early. Instituting treatment early can be curative, or help prevent or postpone complications of the disease.
On your first visit with Dr. Daub, he will review your past medical history and identify your risk factors for certain diseases. Becoming up-to-date on preventive health measures (i.e. regular blood pressure checks, mammograms, colorectal cancer screening) will be a priority. All medical decisions, though, are always a joint effort between patient and physician-with the patient the ultimate decision maker.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Daub enjoys hiking, playing tennis, numerous fix-it projects (in various stages of completion!), furniture refinishing, and walking with his dog named Tigger.
